Best thing/Worst thing
To finish, here are our best and worst things from the trip: Best things… Keith – Easy, the volcano, which was coincidental to our trip. Otherwise it’s hard to pick. Probably the visit to Dettifoss, to the spot where the first scene was filmed. Jo – too much to pick from. The volcano was amazing,…

Flora and Fauna
Invertebrates Broom moth caterpillar (marmite Caterpillar!) – spotted by Mila on the path between the car park and the waterfall at Gullfoss. Birds Gyrfalcon – seen flying along the road between Reykjavik and Geysir. I am assuming it was a Gyrfalcon by picture reference and the fact it was too big to be a merlin.…

Videos
Whilst in Iceland we filmed a few videos. Far from professional quality, but should give the idea of how impressive the natural sights were!!

Colors of Iceland
The Colors of Iceland are a selection of colours for Iceland – from https://pastelpaper.is/ We found them as postcards in a shop in Reykjavik, and liked them!

Day Sixteen – Reykjavík to Halifax
The alarm went off at 4.30am. Rooms checked out of, we collected our breakfast bags from the nice (tired) receptionist and we were ready to go home. The taxi arrived at 5.15am which was terrifying because we expected it at 5.00am. The taxi driver needed a wee when he arrived, but then entertained us all…

Accommodation Review – Storm Hótel
Our final hotel was a typical city-centre tourist lodgings, nothing special but comfortable and clean. Located about 10 minutes from most of the main sights it made for a good base. The only downside was construction work nearby and the constant usage of an excavator-mounted drill for breaking up rock. They were creating an enormous…

Food review – Day Fifteen
We walked a long way for this restaurant, waited a long time for the food, they forgot my garlic bread, and our clothes smelt like fish after, but apart from that it was a nice plaice! It had a separate menu for fish pans, of which Danny couldn’t have most, so he got a fish…
-
Day Fifteen – Reykjavík
Breakfast was exactly as we have come to expect, except with many more biscuits than usual and “oatmeal” that tasted like rice pudding. We were collected for our excursion from the bus stop outside the hotel by minibus and then swapped to a coach at the city bus station to get to the Lava Tunnel…

The Santa Fe
When you travel around Iceland by car you soon appreciate that not all four-wheeled drive cars are equal (actually, you learn the same living in Yorkshire in snow). When we booked, we upgraded our hire car from a regular 4×4 to a “Discovery Sport or equivalent”. Clearly the Icelandic use of the word ‘equivalent’ has…

Volcano review #2 – Fagradalsfjall
Best volcano I’ve ever seen and you could feel the heat from so far away. 10/10 there was actually lava.
-
Food review – Day Fourteen
We had bread and meat soup for starters, and then seafood soup, black seafood pasta and lamb for mains. When we ordered a volcano dessert, we expected a cone shaped structure with sparklers and everything, so what we received was quite disappointing, but delicious. Also we got long spoons.
-
Day Fourteen – Reykholt to Reykjavik
It was a very early start as we were planning a 2 hour journey, a 5 hour hike and a hire car drop off by 3pm. We collected our hilarious packed “breakfast” from reception and were on our way by 7.00am. All we saw for a while were deserted roads apart from the odd car…

Accommodation Review – FossHótel Reykholt
The FossHotel that FossHotel forgot….best view so far of a graveyard. Just about sums it up. Wouldn’t visit again. However, on the positive side, the hotel did consider a Toffee Crisp as a breakfast food. Odd.

Day Thirteen – Siglufjörður to Reykholt
There was a metal squeezy tube of caviar laid casually on the table for breakfast – this is a super-shmancy hotel! An American lady was in the bar being all 80’s yuppy on a work call at 8am. She mentioned lobbying qualifications in various states (yes I was listening deliberately to see what she did!)…

Accommodation Review – Sigló Hótel
A really beautiful hotel, and one that deserves Audley’s “First Class” rating….just a shame we were there for such a short time! Located in a tiny fishing town, Siglufjörður, Sigló Hótel is more traditional than modern, but with some very modern takes. An outdoor hot bath area overlooks the harbour and mountains beyond, big enough…

Waterfall Review #8 – Godafoss
Very clear blue water, was maybe the most beautiful waterfall so far. 8/10 many drones.
-
Food review – Day Twelve
We ate at a place near the hotel, and we were so hungry we all chose the same thing, a really good chicken burger. And a lot of beer! Oh, and we tried pickled herring for a starter. Not a fan!
-
Day Twelve – Lake Mývatn to Siglufjörður
There was a new biscuit at breakfast, so obviosuly I had to try it. Someone once told me that every flock of geese has one that is better at taking risks than the others. The children have nominated me risky-goose as far as new food testing is concerned. It was a bit like a custard…

Accommodation Review – FossHótel Mývatn
Another location, another FossHotel. What is not clear is why they call them FossHotels when none seem to be near a Foss (waterfall). This one equally as impressive as the last, squat in the landscape. Very plush, modern and inviting. This one didn’t have many facilities, unlike the last one. Just a sauna. We only…

Waterfall review #7 – Dettifoss
Best waterfall of the whole trip, very powerful and lots of spray. 9/10 very difficult to get a good viewing angle.
-
Food review – Day Eleven
We went to a nice farm restaurant with a little window into the barn so you could see the cows, and I even got a glass of milk from those same cows! We got a sharing player for starters and then a meat soup and three burgers for mains on very cute cow plates. It…
-
Day Eleven – Lake Mývatn
After a disturbed night due to a room party that finished about 2.30am (and everyone else slept through!) We got up, destroyed another Fosshotel breakfast and got on the road. There were no weird food experiments today, so we just filled our bellies with goodness. We backtracked a bit first of all as the weather…

Day Ten – Egilsstaðir to Lake Mývatn
There was a queue for a table at the buffet breakfast but we employed a boy-child waiter to tell us when a table for four people became free. I wasn’t as keen on the chia porridge today, but I enjoyed the beetroot and ginger shot enough to give it a three word review: spicy purple…

Accommodation Review – Icelandair Hótel Hérað
Basic. Bog standard traveller’s hotel, nothing remarkable about it at all. In fact it’s so unremarkable that all you’re getting is a few photos. Oh yes, the children’s room was hotter than ours.

Day Nine Gallery – Saturday 13th August, Egilsstaðir and the Highlands

Food Review – Day Nine
We went to a random cafe near the hotel, but it was cheap so we liked it. We were very tired and not capable of much decision so we all picked a burger, and it was delicious! There was a monstrous amount of cake and it seemed rude not to have any, so we picked…

Waterfall review #6 – Hengifoss
Climbed 235 metres up from the car park, it took us over an hour to reach it. 3rd tallest waterfall in Iceland. 6/10 we couldn’t even get close enough to get wet.
-
Day Nine – Egilsstaðir and the Highlands
Another hotel, another buffet breakfast! I felt bad for not trying the chia seed porridge the other day, so I started there today and was pleasantly surprised. They had make your own oatmeal as well, but the expected me to make it with water and add salt. Grandpa would have been happy but no thanks!…

Food Review – Day Eight
We ate at a different hotel from the one we are staying at, and the menu consisted of seafood and vegan stuff, so Danny opted for chicken from the kids menu since he didn’t fancy getting poisoned. We got two prawn salads and avocado humus to share, which were both very nice! Then Danny got…

Day Eight – Oraefi to Egilsstaðir
Breakfast was yummy and uncomplicated. We all have a buffet routine now and watching everyone collect their food is like a beautiful ballet! Today was a big driving day – 6 hours altogether, but we had a few stops planned along the way. The first was our last glacier tongue this holiday, called Flaajokull. To…

Accommodation Review – FossHótel Glacier Lagoon
An amazing looking hotel, miles from anywhere (nearest supermarket, or even shop for that matter, is more than an hour away) this had great potential. Rooms are really well presented and comfortable, views incredible (front to the sea, back to the mountains). The communal areas are numerous, with loads of comfy areas to sit and…

Day Seven – Oraefi
With a 10.30am activity to get to today, we went for an 8am breakfast. It went much more smoothly than dinner. We got a lovely window table with views right down to the sea as the skies were clear. We are not taking for granted our Icelandic buffet and I am still following the policy…

Accommodation Review – Hótel Vík Apartments
Our second apartment accommodation was a lot nicer than the first, less prison camp, more Scandy terrace. Vík is an interesting coastal town – comprising the old town (not very big, just a few roads), and the rest of town which is actually a mixture of coastal industry along the shoreline then Hotel Vík and…

Food Review – Day Six
We ate in the hotel restaurant two nights in a row which was very fancy, and we had a mixture of pork belly, torched cod and celeriac and sweet potato gratin throughout the two nights. The food was very good although I wasn’t sure about the caviar with the pork, and when I asked for…

Day Six – Vík to Oraefi
We were up early with the intention of being first into breakfast and then heading back to the beach for some tourist-free photos but when we got up, Keith spotted 3 coaches outside reception and switched the plan to go to the beach first. It turned put to be a good plan. The roads were…

Food Review – Day Five
We ate at a recommended black crust pizza place (which I thought was a tad counterproductive because burning) and we got three pizzas to share with breadsticks as well. I’m not even going to try to remember the flavours so: one was duck, one was lots and lots of cheese, and the other was chorizo…

Day Five – Vík
Breakfast today was a HUGE improvement on yesterday: donutty pastries, good eggs, proper natural yoghurt and black bread. I will let Mila tell you about the jam that wasn’t jam…. As we had a nice quiet day planned, were staying literally opposite a Kronen and had foul weather, we bought ingredients and made lunch to…

Food Review – Day Four
Mila – chicken waffle Danny – burger Jo – chicken waffle Keith – burger The restaurant was attached to a brewery and seemed quite popular, and apparently the burgers were AMAZING, but the mixture of spicy chicken and sweet waffle were very confusing. Completely unrelated, but the plumbing in iceland is very vicious!! I nearly…
-
Day Four – Hella to Vík
We had a more relaxed start today as we had a whole day to do as we wished with the only constraint being where we got to by bed time. Sadly this resulted in a substandard breakfast as three coaches worth of locusts had already eaten. No plates, no cups, no glasses, no fruit juice,…

Accommodation Review – Stracta Hótel
Hotel Stracta is a big hotel with c100 rooms. We have one of six 2 bed apartments. It is a bit tired, but clean and functional. There is a small a la carte restaurant downstairs and an enormous breakfast/evening buffet area upstairs. The lovely check in lady would not take a booking for the restaurant…

Waterfall review #5 – Seljalandsfoss
Tallest waterfall I have ever seen, we went behind it and got even wetter (somehow). 7/10

Waterfall review #4 – Stakkholtsgja Canyon
Secret cave waterfall, the walk there made us incredibly wet. 5/10 too wet

Super Jeep – what is it?
A Super Jeep is basically a customised vehicle designed for use in snow in Iceland. Icelandic petrol heads love a variety of vehicles, and our guide talked about the different vehicles he would like to own…the problem being the cost. The one we travelled in was 25 million Icelandic Krona – that’s £150,000 – but…

Food Review – Day Three
Mila: Burger with weird potato salad thing Danny: ditto Keith: ditto Jo: Icelandic fish gratin We ate in the hotel restaurant, not very fancy, but nice food, and we also got a yoghurt cake to share for dessert.

Day Three – Super Jeep tour
I have decided that breakfast buffets are the best way to get two teenage children up and out for an 8.30am departure! It was nice not have to repack everything this morning as we were staying in Hella for two nights. We decided that we would have to leave the waffle machine for today and…

Volcano review #1 – Kerio
Red soil, amazing blue water but the lack of lava lets it down. 4/10
-
Waterfall review #3 – Faxi
Quite loud, there were locals fishing. 6/10 fish ladder
-
Waterfall review #2 – Oxarafoss
A bit underwhelming, but in an interesting gorge. 3/10 more flies than I have seen in my life.
-
Waterfall review #1 – Gullfoss
Lots of spray, very big and I want to ride off the edge in a barrel. 7/10
-
Food Review – Day Two
We couldn’t be bothered getting dinner in a restaurant so settled for some pizza from a van which turned out to be very expensive and quite average. The garlic bread was VERY salty. We over estimated our appetites and had to eat the leftovers for lunch the next day, which I’m not complaining about!
-
Day Two – Geysir to Hella
Breakfast was unexpectedly competitive – Italians again – but delicious and varied. Half the hotel was queued outside the restaurant by 7.30am when it opened. The yoghurt and rye bread were my highlights, but the others seemed to appreciate the bacon and pancakes. Sadly, the sky was not the blue Keith was hoping for to…
-
Accommodation Review – Hótel Geysir
Hotel Geysir is absolutely our type of hotel: beautiful design features and Scandinavian style paired with THE most comfortable mattresses. The two rooms we had were almost identical – ours with a king sized and the children’s with two twins; their’s with a walk-in shower, ours with a shower over a bath. I think the…

Food Review – Day One
Mila – Lamb with vegetables Danny – Chicken with oriental vegetables Jo – Arctic char with a wild rice risotto and vegetables Keith – Fancy burger with sweet potato chips We ate in the hotel restaurant which was quite posh but very nice. The waitress was lovely and was very keen to offer us the…
-
Day One – Halifax to Geysir
Well, that felt almost like a normal pre-covid journey… barely any masks, no hand sanitiser in sight and an aeroplane. It wasn’t until we were moving down the runway that I realised I had never actually expected to go- so many of our plans have been cancelled that I suppose I hadn’t got my hopes…
-
On the plane
Not too difficult getting through the airport – 90 minutes from arriving to being airside. No plane photo as there were insufficient windows, but as we got to the plane the pilot was looking at volcano pictures on his phone!! We caught him doing it… However, once on the plane there are always things to…

Erupting volcano!!
The Icelandic volcano that last erupted in March 2021 is erupting again! Our agents are going to find out if we can visit when there. In the meantime, have a look at a couple of reports which have detail and videos. Breaking news: Volcanic eruption in the Reykjanes peninsula The eruption in Meradalir could be…

Ready for another trip
We’re getting ready for another trip, this time to Iceland. Flying into Reykjavik, we will be exploring the Icelandic landmass over a couple of weeks, driving c1,300km anticlockwise whilst visiting a variety of attractions and staying in varied accommodation en-route.
